Why does it matter to be ASE Certified?
There are no requirements for mechanic certification either nationwide or in the state of Colorado. Literally anybody can apply for a business license and call themselves a mechanic. Because ASE is a voluntary certification, just the act of taking the tests shows a commitment to professionalism and continuing education.
Who is ASE?
ASE is a nationwide organization that provides voluntary certification for professional technicians, service writers, and parts specialists. They were founded in the 70’s to help motorists judge the quality of mechanic they were taking their vehicle to.
Aren’t all technicians ASE certified?
No. In fact a large majority are not certified. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there are 740,000 mechanics in the US, only 213,000 of them are ASE Certified, and only 74,304 are ASE certified Master Mechanics. That’s only 10% or so of the technicians in the US. Even fewer are certified as Advanced Engine Performance Specialists, 33,556 in the entire country.
